Beaminster

Beaminster is a small market town in Dorset, with a population of around 4000. Set among beautiful undulating farming country, many of its major buildings, dating from the eighteenth century, are of the characteristic golden stone from Ham Hill. Other notable buildings include the local church with its sixteenth century tower. The town of Emminster in Hardy's novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles is based on Beaminster. The map to the left shows the features of the town of Beaminster as it was in the mid twentieth century. Click on any area of the map to see an enlargement.
