Taunton
Taunton, county capital of Somerset,
lies on the River Tone about ten miles south of Bridgewater in the
fertile vale of Taunton Deane, famous for its cider making. A sizeable
town with a population of around forty thousand people, Taunton was for
many centuries at the centre of a thriving West Country woollen
industry. Today Taunton has a busy livestock market, rivalling that of
Exeter. Its economy is supplemented by a growing variety of light
manufacturing industries. The map
below shows the town of Taunton as it was in the mid twentieth century.
