Hawick

Hawick is the largest town in the former county of Roxburghshire with a population of approximately 15,000. Situated on the River Teviot in the Scottish Borders, Hawick's early growth was largely due to its ideal location as a woollen mill town. It is well-known for its annual Common Riding, commemorating a victory of local callants over English raiders in the early sixteenth century. The town is now a popular destination for visiting tourists and those keen on outdoor sports such as fishing and walking. The map below shows the features of the town, its streets and houses as they were in the middle of last century. Click on a selected area of the map to see an enlargement.
