Dunfermline
The city of Dunfermline, population
around 40,000, sits on high ground three miles north of the Firth of
Forth. This Fife Royal burgh was capital of Scotland for six centuries
and King Robert the Bruce lies at rest within the grounds of Dunfermline
Abbey. In the past, the town’s industry has included linen,
brewing and distilling, iron foundries, milling and rope-making. Major employers in the town
today are engineering,
electronics, and textiles and, more recently, telephone call centres of major
companies. Dunfermline is the birthplace of its major benefactor, Andrew
Carnegie. The map below shows the
