Axminster
Axminster, an ancient market town
dating back to Saxon times, situated on the River Axe in Devon, acquired
a reputation for the making of carpets as early as the eighteenth
century and, to this day, the name of Axminster is associated with
carpet making, which is carried on today in a new factory which is a
popular visitor attraction. There are a few old coaching inns in the
town and some fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture. The map
to the left shows the features of the
town of Axminster, its streets and houses as
they were in the mid twentieth century.
